Picture, if you will, a call accounting database that can extract data from millions of records and produce
any report in mere minutes, requires minimal maintenance (i.e. no additional IT support staff!), and provides open,
seamless data exchange capabilities...The following is the story of IMDB: why existing technologies were unsuccessful,
how IMDB (in memory database) was developed, and why IMDB is a success.
...Several large clients presented TelSoft Solutions with a challenge. Their Call Detail Records contained
a wealth of untapped information. They wanted a quick and painless way to access and analyze that information.
For example,
- Marketing sought critical information from incoming calling trends;
- Accounts Payable wanted ammunition for carrier contract negotiations from actual outbound calling trends;
- Security needed to isolate specific data from millions of call records, in a rapid drill down process...
To address this challenge, concrete, minimum performance goals were determined: 1) all reports, regardless of
size and type, must run in under five minutes (start to finish), 2) sustained call processing speed (collecting
call records, calculating call price information, and database insertion) must exceed a rate of one million calls
processed per hour (processing at this speed ensures that data processing does not delay reporting in any way,
even when the call data arrives in large batches), 3) individuals with no programming background and minimal computer
experience must be able to easily run and customize reports, and 4) the system must run on off-the-shelf industry-standard
hardware...
